RMDS Homework Policy 2003 (reviewed 2013)
Purpose:
- To practice schoolwork
- To develop independent learning
- To enable parents to support their child’s schoolwork and to increase their awareness of their child’s learning tasks at school
Parent’s Role:
- To be present to supervise child’s work
- To help the child to complete tasks on occasion. This may be very regularly for children with particular learning needs
- To hear learning work / reading tables and spellings
- To discuss with and listen to the child if the homework is orally based
- To check that all homework has been completed
Teacher’s Role:
- To set homework in accordance with The School Plan appropriate to the children’s level and ability
- To correct homework regularly
- To liase with parents on child’s progress progress / difficulties with homework
- To explain clearly to parents at class meetings and individually if needed how they can support their child’s homewor
Pupil’s Role:
- To listen to the homework tasks as they are explained in class and to ensure they have the correct books and equipment to complete their homework fully
- To complete the homework to the best of their ability
Homework will consist of the following:
Junior / Senior Infants:
Activity sheet (oral, maths or writing) and reading, to take approximately 15 – 20 minutes. Sheet and reading to be signed by parent.
Rang 1 / Rang 2:
Written activity, (maths and writing), spelling, tables, to take 30 minutes. Diary to be signed by parent.
Rang 3 / Rang 4:
Written exercise, maths, oral work, spelling, tables, to take up to 45 minutes. Diary to be signed at the discretion of the teacher.
Rang 5 / Rang 6:
Written exercise, maths, oral work, spelling, tables, to take up to 1 hour maximum. Diary to be signed at the discretion of the teacher.
Note:
- The issue of appropriate homework for some pupils needs to be considered carefully at IEP meetings and in consultation with parents
- The weight of schoolbags can be a factor in setting homework tasks.
- Due emphasis must be given to oral and learning homework in all classes.
