From the Board

Welcome back to all returning families and a special welcome to the new families who have joined the school community this year.

As most of you will be aware, the role of the Board of Management is to oversee the day to day running of the school.  The Board is composed of 8 members: the principal, two members appointed by parents, one member appointed by the teachers, two members appointed by the school Patron and two community representatives.   The Patron nominees and the community representative are often also parents of pupils in the school. The current Board took up office in 2011 and is now coming to the end of its four year term.  A new Board will be constituted in the coming months and will take over from December 2015 onwards.  If you're interested in being involved watch out for communications from the Patron in the coming weeks about the process of appointing the new Board members.

Board involvement is just one example of the generous contribution of time and expertise that many parents make to the school. RMDS is also very fortunate in the financial generosity of parents.  This money is used to fill the gap between government funding and what is needed to provide a high class learning environment for our children. Last year the school raised approximately €54,000 through parental voluntary contributions and a variety of fundraising efforts.    The school is planning to raise a similar amount this year and details of the fundraising plan and the uses to which the money is applied will be communicated to parents in the coming week.

As you are probably aware work on the re-development of Mountpleasant Park is about to begin.  The school, through the work of our principal, Joan Whelan, and a financial contribution towards the re-development plan, has been the driving force behind kickstarting this project.  The pupils were instrumental in designing a play feature for the Park and, because of the generous contribution of parents, the Board is delighted to be in a position to fund this element of the project.  The re-developed Park will be a fantastic addition to the physical environment in which the school operates.
