School News in Brief….
Well, what a busy time of year!!! As we approach these last few weeks of June, many people outside of education may suspect that the school is “winding down” in a sense. In fact, the complete opposite is true. These last few weeks are some of the busiest times in the life of a school.
We had our Hockey World Cup Final today. Well done to all the children from Rang 3 - Rang 6 who participated, and to the organisers from Rang 6 in particular who co-ordinated the whole event with ease. The focus of this event is to play hockey, and have fun! It was a great few weeks and the sporting attitude from the players was exemplary!
Next week is Active Week here in RMDS and we are so looking forward to it! Hopefully the sun will stick around for the week with a bit of luck!

Sports Day is almost here!!! It takes place this Sunday, 11th June in Sandford Park secondary school from 11am - 2pm. Sports Day is a huge event in the school calendar and kids from all classes get a chance to play together and run races. Parents’ Tug of War is always a major event and teddy bear races, three legged races and egg (potato) and spoon races get everyone involved in a really fun way. There will be games, merch, a tuck shop and baked goods, as well as a chill out zone, meaning that there is really something for everyone.

Clothes Swap!
The RMDS clothes swap is on this Wednesday, 14th June at 08:30 a.m. and is a joint initiative between the Green School Committee and the Student Council.
Clothes can only be brought in on Monday, 12th and Tuesday, 13th.
The clothes are to be put on the bench beside the sensory room. The sensory room is located near Rang 6.
The RMDS clothes swap is to encourage recycling clothes. It is also to help prevent fast fashion.
Fast fashion is when you buy something and only wear it a few times and then throw it out.
A lot of times the clothes that you throw out go to clothes dumps in Chile and a lot of parts in Africa. A clothes dump is a place where they dump a large amount of clothes to decompose, which is very bad for the environment as clothes take thousands and even millions of years to decompose.

Solar Panels
There are two main types of solar panels:
Solar Photovoltaic Panels
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels capture light from the sun and convert it into electricity. The panels are arranged into an array, usually attached to a pitched roof but can also be sited on a flat roof or at ground level.
The electricity produced is direct current (DC) and needs to be converted to alternating current (AC) for home use using an inverter.
This electricity powers your home and any surplus generated can be stored in a battery, diverted to your immersion and if exported to the grid, you will then get paid for it. The price is known as the Domestic Feed-in Tariff Rate and is approximately 20 cents/kWh.
Solar Thermal Panels
Solar Thermal Panels use a collector to absorb the radiated energy from the sun to generate your domestic hot-water supply. This is stored in an insulated hot-water cylinder, which usually contains a back-up generation system in case of excess hot-water demand or a lack of sunshine.
The Solar Thermal system is mechanical in nature whereas Solar PV is electrical.

Summer Stars Reading Challenge
The Summer Stars Reading Challenge will be taking place throughout the summer at Rathmines library.
This challenge is intended to encourage primary school children to continue reading during the summer holidays.
The idea is that the child reads 8 books over the summer.
The first step is for the child to register at the library. They will then receive a Reading Card and a bookmark. The idea is that the child reads 8 books over the summer.
For each book read, the child will get a stamp on their reading card.
After 2 stamps, or 2 books read, they receive a bag.
After 4 stamps they receive a pencil and sticker. After 6 books they receive a note book and after 8 they receive a certificate and medal, which will be awarded to them at the end of Summer party.
There will also be a raffle at the party and the prizes will be books, games and book tokens.
The party last year was a great success and all the children had a great time. It was also nice to see the children feel a sense of achievement for completing the challenge.
Rathmines Library would like to reach as many children as possible in order to encourage them to enjoy reading. The choice of book is entirely up to the individual child!
